Trip Facts
Bokta Peak Climbing Overview
Boktoh Peak (6114m/20,060ft) is located in one of the more remote areas of the Kanchenjungha South base camp. Boktoh trekking peak became famous in the spring of 1991 when a Slovenian expedition team climbed it as an acclimatisation peak before attempting Kanchenjunga from its South East Ridge. The trekking trail to Kanchenjunga South base camp is one of the most spectacular trails that Nepal has to offer. It is a perfect objective for mountaineers looking for a challenging 6000m peak. It is suitable for those climbers who have previous 6000m climbing experience, several high passes and British hill experience. The peak is rarely climbed and permits have only been issued for climbs since 2002 under the authorisation of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Before then, the permits were issued under the Department of Tourism. This route was opened to trekkers in 1988, though people have trekked in the area on mountaineering expeditions since the turn of the century.
The semi-technical nature of Boktoh, also known as Bokta to the locals, is a deceivingly complex peak that calls for skills in route finding. The Boktoh trekking route is shared with the approach to the wild Mt. Kanchenjunga. Continuing on the caravan trail past Bokta peak would bring you to Kanchenjunga’s South base camp. The Kanchenjunga region is quite special; it is more remote, so it has fewer trekkers who pass through. Bokta climbing offers fantastic views of the Himalayas. From the summit, you can see: Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m/28,169ft), Kumbhakarna (7710m/25,595ft) Dhormo Peak (6850m/22,473ft).
Your journey starts with a flight to Bhadrapur followed by a drive to Phidim. The trek takes you through several wild and remote villages such as: Khamdembe, Yamphudin, Tarading, Ramche and Octang. After you’re successful and enjoyable trip, you will return to Taplejung and take a flight to Kathmandu or drive to Bhadrapur and then take a flight to Kathmandu.
Satori Adventures always focuses on safety, comfort and an enjoyable climbing experience for our clients. Satori Adventures has a unique strategy that optimises acclimatisation and allows clients to have more energy for the Bokta Peak climbing period. Satori Adventures always issues experienced, government-licensed climbing Sherpa guides. Our climbing schedules and programs are designed by experienced climbing guides and Sirdars. You can rest assured that our staff will only allow you to climb peaks in safe and secure conditions. The most promising route is via the col to the North of the mountain. From a high camp at the Col, the route follows the snow slope under the right shoulder to the summit. While the slope is moderately steep, the route has exposure to rockfall. There is an icefall to access the final 400m of the route, from the col on its North side, just above the icefall, along the nave shoulder.

Good to Know
Satori Adventures and Expedition aims at giving proper information to many travelers, trekkers and climbers who have some confusion regarding the booking process of the trip in Nepal. Satori Adventures therefore desires to provide guideline for the first-time visitors or travelers so that they can comfortably start the process to book the selected package legally. Before starting the booking process we always advise our trekkers, travelers and climbers to intelligently check whether the company is genuine and whether they are fully safe to travel in the company’s guidance. We ask them to be acquainted with the company they want book their holiday trip with. Is the company genuine and authorized from Government of Nepal, Office of the Company Registrar, Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Rastra Bank ‒Central Bank of Nepal (authorized for foreign currency), Permanent Account Number (PAN), and the Department of Cottage & Small Industries). Are they financially secured and environmentally conscious? We advise them to make sure about these formalities because there are some companies in Nepal that have been running business without abiding by the rules and regulation of the Government. Some companies were once registered but by now their licenses have already been expired and yet they have providing the services illegally.
On many occasions, Government of Nepal and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal have found that many foreigners’ tour operators, NGOs and INGOs have been involved in directly operating tours, trekking, and mountaineering holiday adventures without having government license and abiding by the Government rules. It has been also found that many individuals, freelance guides and porters have been arranging trips illegally by creating their own personal website. We have observed that many trekkers and climbers face a host of problems once they arrive in Kathmandu as they lack adequate information. Many of them file complaints to Government of Nepal and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal for legal action such as the refund of the advanced payment. There is hardly any justice given to the cheated clients. Thus, so as to prevent all these probable problems we request our travelers to check the company before booking any trip to the Himalayas.

Bokta Peak Climbing FAQs
You are considering climbing a 6,000 m peak in Nepal, but this does not specify your intention or fitness level. Still, if you have no mountaineering experience at all, you may choose peaks like Mera Peak or other easier peaks to climb. With a little prior experience, you can choose Island Peak, Lobuche Peak, Pisang Peak, or Chulu East and West.
The access routes to these peaks are well established, with teahouse lodges available until very close to Base Camp along the famous Annapurna Circuit trekking trail or the Everest Base Camp trekking trail.
Bokta Peak is located in Kanchanjunga Conservation Area near Nepal-India border south of Kanchanjunga 8,586 meters (28,169 feet) the third highest mountain peak of the world. The route to Base camp is remote, and required camping services mixed of teahouse/lodges accommodation.
As mentioned above, Bokta Peak and other 6,000 m peaks are not easy climbs in the Himalayas as conditions are different here from your home country. Many of our clients attempting these climbs are cyclists, runners, and fitness enthusiasts. To prepare your body, it is recommended to follow a 2-3 months training plan before the expedition. Focus on cardiovascular exercises such as running, cycling, swimming, and stair climbing.
In addition, your legs, core, and upper body should be well-conditioned, as climbing involves ascending and descending steep slopes during the summit push. Since you will also need to carry a backpack with water, snacks, and some climbing gears, it is required to practice hiking or training with a loaded backpack to simulate real conditions.
If you are thinking of just climb days, it is three days’ task from Base camp to high camp-summit and then descend to Base Camp (Lapsang La). If your curiosity is for whole trip days, our program is of 29 days starting and ending in Kathmandu combined with Annapurna circuit trek. 2-4 days for your travel to Kathmandu and return to your home should be added depending upon your location. So, in total it can be 31-32 days.
Age is not necessarily a limiting factor in terms of success on Bokta Peak climb. Government of Nepal does, however, restrict permits for minors under sixteen years of age, but there is no upper age limit. Physical and mental fitness are primary prerequisites. Older climbers, or those with lower physical stamina, may need more time to acclimatize or may require extra days to control their pace. However, there is no alternative on summit day – you must climb hard and complete a long descent.
There are very few tea house/lodge accommodation options available during this climb. As far as possible, we use them. We pitch high-quality tents and provide high-altitude standard mattresses and sleeping mats for your good sleep and rest in Base Camp and high-camp.
Satori Adventures’ representative will be waiting you at the airport with your placard. Before you meet us, you are required to collect your luggage, clear immigration and customs, and proceed to arrival terminal. Airport and arrival terminal is small in Kathmandu, and you can easily find a person holding a placard with your name. We then transfer you to your pre-booked Hotel, and all other services included as per agreed itinerary.
Certain medical conditions, such as respiratory illnesses, and some medications, including sleeping pills, can increase the risk of altitude sickness. It is important to inform us or your guide in advance about any medical conditions or medications before ascending to higher altitudes. You can help your body acclimatize and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Climbing Bokta Peak in summer or winter is not a problem, as the government allows expeditions during these seasons and permit fees are also lower than in two prime seasons. However, access to the peak in summer rainy months can be challenging because of monsoon rains, while the winter months can be extremely cold in the mountains. Despite these challenges, climbing the peak is still possible.
